Looking For The Top Talent? Think Again
It is not uncommon for hiring managers and recruiters to look for extraordinarily intelligent folks with a very broad skill set. It is a common human tendency to look and seek for the best for oneself! But when reviewing this decision for a long run, there are practical difficulties that can possibly occur by bringing in a techie guy!
Lack of long-term commitment:
Firstly, a very brilliant developer is not going to stick with you for a long time! In a study that included 500+ developers, it was observed that the top ones switch companies 4 times than the average developers.
The amount of money you invest in him is not going to not yield you, long-term loyalty, in terms of a sustained partnership. Sooner or later, the chap will move to a different company which offers him a better value. But, in case you employ an average developer, there are more positive chances for him to stay with your organization for a longer period. Thereby, saving you the effort invested in setting up an ‘employee-hunt’ program very sooner.
Not much difference in expertise:
In fact, when we start to look more closely, we come to understand that there is not much difference that can come around with a very highly skilled developer. With the right guidance and clear expectations set, there is always a possibility for even a fresher or a person from a varied technical background to excel in his career as a developer and also bring substantial benefits for the company.
Another major issue that is being widely reported in the recent days is the conflicts that the top developers bring in! Recently, there was a case where an architect refused to integrate NodeJS/AngularJS for nearly 7 years in the company and kept their applications in legacy ASP pages. There are companies where the heads adopt an approach, keeping in mind, the cost-cutting, team balance and efficiency in mind. But, top developers concern themselves only with their own individual ideas, thereby paving way for a difference in opinions with the lead management.
So, take a moment to think again to decide whom to recruit!
